Language and culture: Language learning through the culture of the target languageTeaching English as a foreign language, winter spring 2010Language and culture: Language learning through the culture of the target languageAs language and culture are interdependent, so a language cannot be taught without culture (Maria, 2002). How many people learn a culture of the target language when learning a language? Can you say that a person who is fluent in a language can fully understand the culture of that language? I would say that one who is perfect in the target language may not be perfect in the culture, but he or she would be better at learning a language if he or she learns in a culture-friendly environment.IntroductionLearning a new language takes a lot of time, I am the one who believes that immersion in the culture of the target language is the most effective way to learn a new language. I am an example of this belief: after graduating from high school, I thought that learning a new language would be essential in the future, which is why I started learning English from from January 2006. Learning a new language was not easy because I was simply exposed to the target language before I started learning. One day, I saw a poster informing about a work site where I could do voluntary service in Europe. I thought I could improve my English there, because all the people in the camp came from all countries and the official language was English. I am applying for the renovation of an art museum in Eupen, Belgium, owned by UNICEF (the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund). I didn't speak English...... middle of paper ...... my class by ordering students' language skills can lead a more active discussion. For future research, I would like to find results that students who learned a language with a culture course have positive effects on their consequent learning outcomes.References1.
