  • Essay / Animal experimentation - 1546

Two months ago, I went to see the movie “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” at the theater. This film was about chimpanzees exposed to animal research to find a cure for Alzheimer's disease. As a result, one of the chimpanzees tested with the Alzheimer's treatment developed enhanced genetic intelligence that led to the freedom of the other captive chimpanzees. Although this film is a science fiction film, during the film there were scenes depicting cruelty towards chimpanzees. These scenes made me fear how inhumane people are to research chimpanzees. Even with a sense of ethics, I believe that animals should deserve respect and consideration. However, some scenes in this film also made me think about how animals such as chimpanzees were an essential part of human life. The chimpanzees in the film were the subject of experiments to find a cure for people with Alzheimer's disease. This demonstrated that chimpanzees themselves suffered to promote the well-being of humans. This exemplary film raises the following question: should animal testing be authorized? This question introduces controversy around two arguments about whether animal testing should be allowed or not. In addition to this question, researcher Jerod M. Loeb, in the article "Human Rights versus Animal Rights: In Defense of Animal Research", is concerned about the fate of animals, but cannot prevent the improvement of medicine or other advances for the well-being of humans. On the other hand, philosopher Tom Reagan, who contributed to the book “Ill-Gotten Gains,” is against animal testing. He argues that conducting animal experiments "demands the heavy moral price of failing to respect the inherited value of animals, regardless of the benefits to research... middle of article ...... ntists against animal cruelty, often refers to an optimistic step toward advancing scientific knowledge preventing future diseases in humans and animals as well. It is time to express this grief more than anything on an important topic that is going around the world, “animal testing”. Many might argue; others might agree with the same idea. Ultimately, I respect both beliefs; Both Loeb and Reagan make powerful arguments to support their beliefs. However, Loeb's dynamic conviction motivated me to believe that animal experimentation should be attempted and should not be hindered. Throughout this journey of disagreements on both sides, animal testing has once again demonstrated that it can develop new drugs for the well-being of humans, also benefit animals and advance scientific knowledge to prevent future illnesses..
