Essay / Niels Bohr - 855
Niels Bohr was a major contributor to modern physics. He received the Nobel Prize for his work on the atomic model. He also found a way to further define what a nucleus looks like and also worked on quantum theory. He accomplished all of this while living in Copenhagen, Denmark and serving as a Jewish chemist during World War II. After the war, he became a major contributor to his open world theory aimed at helping nations learn from each other about weapons of mass destruction. Niels Bohr was born on October 7, 1885 in Copenhagen, Denmark. He was born into an upper middle class family. His father, Christian, was a professor of physiology at the University of Copenhagen. His father was also twice nominated for the Nobel Prize in Physics. His father's ambitions in physics sparked Niels Bohr's interest in physics. Niels Bohr received his master's degree in physics in 1909 from the University of Copenhagen, then his doctorate in 1911. He became a professor at the university in 1916, then founded the Institute of Theoretical Physics at the university in 1921. His mother , Ellen, was the daughter of a prominent Jewish banker. Niels Bohr's Jewish origin caused him many problems in his research in Europe during World War II. Niels Bohr's contributions to helping Jewish physicists during World War II were very impressive. Niels Bohr used his connections to well-known foundations to keep himself and other Jewish physicists away from Hitler's rule. At the start of World War II, Niels Bohr offered refuge to German Jewish physicists at the University of Copenhagen. Many physicists then fled to the United States in search of safer refuge from the Germans. Denmark was occupied by Germany on April 9, 1940...... middle of paper ...... his son Aage N. Bohr, received the 1975 Nobel Peace Prize for physics for the model collective of the atom. core. Both his quantum theory and his atomic model have had a huge impact on the world of modern chemistry and physics. Even until the day Niels Bohr died on November 18, 1962, he was dedicated to his vision of an open world and atomic energy security among nations.
