It is important to understand the role that retired people play in our society and in our workforce in order to create an environment where the economy thrives as a whole, while respecting the individual. his dignity and character. This respect is a mountain to climb as there are many obstacles surrounding the issue, such as ageism and age discrimination. Our society devalues old age in many ways, and this is especially true in the United States, where individualism, autonomy, and independence are highly valued. (Lisa Peñaloza. 2012) Ageism involves stereotyping and discrimination against individuals or groups based on their age. The term, coined by Robert Neil Butler in 1969, is a common form of discrimination in the United States and other societies, which includes negative views and stereotypes toward older people. This type of discrimination can have a significant negative impact on the care and well-being of older people. (Boundless 2016) With the growing number of baby boomers and an aging workforce, this becomes a more alarming social problem when trying to determine places in society. Aging has a direct impact on the labor market, as improved life expectancy influences individual behavior in the decision to stay active longer. (Anon. 2009.) The underlying problem of ageism is the reality of how many people remain in the workforce longer than expected, but fail to meet desired standards due to their old age. The numerical ratio between those who are able to be economically productive (14 to 64 years) and those who are dependent (65 years and above) clearly shows the impact of the age structure of a society.
