  • Essay / John Sirica and the Ammidown Murder - 2407

When I found out that my English class had to write a research paper, I was horrified. I thought students only did this at the end of graduate school and not at the beginning of their first year in college. All I knew about the research papers was that there was a tremendous amount of research to be done. In my effort to overcome this obstacle and not get bored with research, I wanted to tackle an interesting topic, but I didn't know where to start. I spent hours looking through a lot of topics and people, but once I found the topic somewhat interesting, I couldn't find much information on the Library of Congress website . So I decided to choose a word that I hoped would lead me to an interesting topic. I set my search limits to manuscripts and searched for the word murder. There, the first name at the top of the page was Sirica, John. John J. Sirica spent his younger years at Georgetown University studying law. He worked at a small law firm as an attorney, but became active in Republican Party politics. In 1957, President Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed him chief judge of the U.S. District Court in DC. Sirica did not use traditional methods in court, but instead used his own technique to get to the bottom of the truth. He famously played a role in the Watergate scandal and the murder trial of Robert Louis Ammidown. Finally, I found an interesting topic worth sticking with. The court case United States v. Ammidown fascinated me, so I immersed myself in finding sources to support my research topic. I was able to find secondary sources on the Montgomery College catalog and through Google News.
