Essay / Stimulus Condition: Family Behavior Change
Identify the Target BehaviorWhen thinking of a good behavior to change, I tried to think of something I could use to improve. I have tried to think about a psychological behavior, I have difficulty accepting it and I have tried for so long to figure out how to improve this behavior. Eventually, while thinking about it and discussing it with my family and my teacher, we came to the conclusion that I would need help to “say positive things to my family.” I chose this behavior because I am not the type to express how I feel to my family or compliment their behavior in a situation. So, I went into this project knowing that I'm not just doing it for a project, but also to get an incentive to be more expressive towards those I love. Basic data I recorded my data for 2 weeks, or 14 days (Monday to Sunday). I kept a calendar with the times and days of the sighting listed. On the calendar, I wrote down the name of each of my family members and the positive comment I had made to that family member. I set a goal of 2 compliments to each family member, which in my family of four would amount to a total of 8 comments per day and a total of 112 comments at the end of the observation. The reason I kept the information on a calendar was to help me remember that this observation was not just for a paper but also to help me become a better wife and mother. Everyone in my house knows that all my important commitments are on the calendar. Additionally, recording data was difficult at certain times of the day. When I was at school or running errands, I used my cell phone to record certain observations and when I got home, I wrote them on the calendar. I observed a period early on where I noticed I needed to re-evaluate how I was... middle of paper ...... his observation would fit into my daily behaviors. We have learned a tool that satisfies our mind without being rewarded or punished. There was no wrong or right in completing this experiment and my family members all participated because they were motivated to improve. Additionally, when developing the behavior, I used a continuous reinforcer, such as telling myself, “I did the right thing and my family will become stronger because of the experience.” In the experience, I feel that my family members and I have developed intrinsic rewards because we have learned that we do not need someone to speak up to use what we do when we call someone one by one name and that compliments become natural now. By simply doing an experiment for school, my family developed a new tool that makes them happy with who they are and we encourage each other to express all of our emotions in a positive way..
