Jeremiah was a prophet of God. A prophet of God is someone who carries God's words and message to his people, even though it may sometimes be unintentional. Jeremiah warned the people of Judah that there was an imminent invasion because they had abandoned God. Jeremiah was born to a Jewish priest named Hilkiah. He grew up in the village of Anathoth. His prophetic work occurred during the reign of Josiah. Jeremiah was called a prophet in 626 BC. God was called to first give the prophecy of the invasion and destruction of Jerusalem. The invasion would occur by invaders from the North. He gave this prophecy just before the exile and invasion. This prophecy of invasion was caused by the people of Judah and Israel worshiping false gods and not following the Ten Commandments. While turning their backs on God, they worshiped Baal. By the time Jeremiah gave the prophecy, the people were even sacrificing their children to the false god and breaking the covenant.
