There are several examples in the book Night by Elie Wiesel where Elijah has an internal conflict about his spirituality. Elijah witnesses many horrors and sometimes questions the presence of God. However, there are other times when Elijah thanks and prays to God. Elie's beliefs change throughout the book and he doesn't really know what to think. At the beginning, we meet Elijah's master, Moishe the Beadle. Every evening they prayed, asked questions and talked about God. Elijah even said, “And during those evenings I became convinced that Moishe the Beadle would help me enter eternity” (Wiesel 5). But things started to change. Foreign Jews were expelled from Sighet and Moishe, who normally sang and chanted, became silent. Soon, German army vehicles appeared on the streets. During the eight-day Passover, the Jewish community celebrated. The Bible commanded them to do so, but everyone wished they could stop pretending.
