INTRODUCTIONThe novel 'Thunderwith' by Libby Hathorn is a touching novel which tells the story of a teenage girl called Lara Ritchie. In the novel, the protagonist Lara feels completely alone after the death of her mother, forcing her to move to her father's family in the mountains of Bulahdelah. She is an intruder in her father's family where she has to deal with multiple daily problems between Gladwyn (stepmother) and her children. Lara feels she will never be accepted and loved until she finds the mysterious dog Thunderwith. In the text, the author has used certain literary devices such as cohesive devices, spelling, linguistic devices, to enhance the story itself. These techniques are mainly used to add reality to the text and to create better communication between characters. The intention of this article is to discuss the use of many different literary devices in the text used by the author. BODY The linguistic technique of imagery plays an important role in the text “Thunderwith”. This technique is used to create a mental image of the scene using descriptive language. Imagery makes a work more realistic and helps the reader visualize and experience the author's writing in depth. An example of imagery is where Hathorn writes “Running and running through the forest up to the hills, effortlessly, sliding over rocks and bushes. Almost flying……..She reached out into the empty air. She tried to call out to him but the cry froze in her throat. » In this example, the author creates a mental image of Lara and Thunderwith by using descriptive words such as soaring and flying, which makes the author's writing more realistic. The linguistic technique of suspense is used in the text "Thunderwith" to create a middle of paper......spelling/colloquialism in the text is when Pearl says "Who wants a prezzie?" This example contains an Australian slang word "prezzie" which is also spelled in a very creative way. The original word for "prezzie" is price. CONCLUSION The use of many different literary devices allowed the reader to read the story with great interest. These different techniques allowed the author to create different effects in the text such as suspense, imagery, resolution, mood and spelling. These techniques improved the way the characters communicate with each other and added reality to the text. This novel is a real-life example that lets us know how teenagers face different problems at a certain point in life when there is no one to help/support them. If someone is in big trouble, there will always be a Thunderwith to help them..
