The changing social habits of a contemporary society have seen Cleopatra represented in many different ways. Although few artifacts remain of the true image of Cleopatra, we see from her portrait on coins (Fear, 2008, p, 21 Fig 1.4) that although she is not of a legendary beauty, she had the power to captivate two of the greatest Romans of her time. time. Cleopatra consummated her union with Julius Caesar, which strengthened her hold on the throne, after his assassination; she formed an alliance with Mark Antony, in opposition to Octavian, a coalition that would lead to her downfall as the combined forces of Antony and Cleopatra would be defeated against Octavian at the Battle of Actium in 31 BCE. (Fear, 2008, p.7) Unlike today's tabloid advertising, “losers attract notoriety” (Fear, 2008, p. 6). Roman society was no different with a reputation of paramount importance and continually upheld. The union of Antony and Cleopatra was ammunition for Octavian and propaganda used against the couple in their pursuit of the Battle of Actium. (Fear, 2008, p.7.)
