It is through these interactions with these people that I can relate to that I began to learn not only how to communicate, but how to communicate competently through the characteristic of relevance. While it is true that I would be quick to describe myself as a weak self-monitor when it comes to social interaction, but when it comes to important matters, I have learned to put my self-monitor raised up to help a friend in need. In one case, I had a friend who had recently gone through a difficult breakup with her ex-boyfriend. Generally, I'm known for being a prankster of a more cynical variety, which, just in case, doesn't make me a very attractive candidate for voicing issues as well. However, I realize that my friend is suffering and as a friend, I want to do everything I can to bring her comfort. Putting my antics aside, I approached the situation with sincerity, sympathized with her, and paid attention to her feelings. Once she felt comfortable with the situation, she thanked me with a warm smile and from there I could feel that the bond we had grew stronger through my ability to communicate appropriately and fit my self-monitoring to fit the mold that situation necessary for
