  • Essay / How Presidents Harry S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower...

As President, Harry S. Truman (Democrat) and Dwight D. Eisenhower (Republican) fought against the spread of communism an absolute priority. Both served two terms. President Truman served as Roosevelt's vice president for only eighty-two days, when Roosevelt died, making him the 33rd president. Truman demonstrated an aggressive and costly methodology in dealing with Stalin and the Soviet Union. Eisenhower, conversely, focused his foreign policy more on promoting superior American nuclear weapons technologies to deter Soviet expansion and the spread of communism. While Truman had to appeal to the fear of Americans and Congress to gain approval for his costly policies, Eisenhower's policies were relatively inexpensive and so he had no problem gaining approval. Truman, also known as "Give 'em Hell Harry", was sworn in on April 12, 1945 at the age of sixty. The same year, he used the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This topic continues to be debated as many disapprove of the President's decision as it resulted in heavy civilian casualties. Those who approve of the bombings praise the president for his decision and for the fact that it led to Japan's unconditional surrender and saved countless American lives. Important pieces of legislation signed by Truman include the United Nations Charter in 1945, the "Truman Doctrine" in 1947, the North Atlantic Treaty of 1949, and the Mutual Security Act of 1951. Truman also ordered ground forces Americans to help South Korea. in 1950, when they were invaded by the North Korean communist army. The United States Air Force and Navy also received attack orders. This officially entered middle of paper......r, Hawaii was admitted. Comparing the two presidents, I find myself asking, “Which was the better president?” » I believe both have made significant achievements during their tenure. I think in this situation it's hard to establish one as better. They both had similar issues to deal with, but they also had quite different issues. Truman, who was propelled to the presidency after Roosevelt's death, did an exceptional job. He not only faced the post-war economic recession and the Great Depression, but also the problems of the Cold War. Eisenhower also had the problem of the Cold War, but under his presidency the economy was and continued to improve greatly due to his economic policies. Often, I believe the country's success under one administration is driven by the policies of the previous administration.
