    General InformationThe Toronto Transportation Commission was established in 1920, but it was not renamed the Toronto Transit Commission until January 1, 1954. The first subway of Toronto, which also started in 1954; the Union-Eglinton section of what is now the Yonge Line was built with war revenues, when gasoline limits limited the use of automobiles. Additionally, that year, the TTC became the sole public transportation provider in the Greater Toronto Area. However, the Toronto Transit Commission has come a long way, as the total number of riders in 2008 was 466.7 million. In addition, in 2009, 2,487,000 transport tickets (including transfers) were collected during an average working day.
