  • Essay / Racism is still on the rise in the United States - 612

Feeling unwanted can be the most heartbreaking feeling to experience, but being told you don't belong because of something 'as simple as race is infinitely more overwhelming. In the United States this is still very common; and not just against one race. There are many cities, and even states, that are considered oriented toward a single race. It's especially horrible because people try to say that racism is a thing of the past, when the truth is almost the opposite. For example, if a mixed white-black couple showed affection in public, there is a good chance they would be avoided or given dirty looks and/or snide remarks. Additionally, another important factor that maintains racism is the fact that it is considered acceptable for certain races to say words or phrases that other races cannot say, especially in the media. Racism remains a big problem in the United States; and as long as people continue to blame their race for their behavior, racism will only grow, which will prevent the country from progressing toward greater things, like scientific breakthroughs, for example. Admittedly, most cities are judged by the race that dominates them. For example, if one is planning a vacation to California, they are more likely to stay in a “safe” city. This basically means that they would stay away from towns with bad reputations, like Watts or Compton, but in reality, these towns gained that reputation through the actions of their previous residents. However, most cities like these are making efforts to shed this reputation. According to a 2010 study by Brown University, the most diverse city in the country is Vallejo-Fairfield, California; where about 41% of the ......middle of paper ......appers for example. Instead of just using words like brother or comrade, they choose to use the “N” word. For what? Is it because they are trying to stand out from other races? Or maybe because they are still clinging to the past? Unfortunately, the use of such degrading slang is so ingrained in society that most people use it without being fully aware of it. Additionally, the use of derogatory slang is far from limited to the black community; most Hispanics or Pacific Islanders are also allowed to use the "N" word without fear of being racist. So, if artists use the “N” word in their music or in everyday speech, it would be acceptable by society as long as they are not white. diverse-cities-brown-university-study_n_1865715.html#slide=1490229www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/the-n-word-and-how-to-use-it/Content?oid=895154
