Essay / Ropes Course Event - 772
When I was tasked with creating an event that correlated with the values of the university and fraternity, the ideas flowed freely through my head. Some were elusive, others intangible, but I hope the one I present today is both tangible and practical. When I was young, my parents, at my request, sent me to a Jewish camp in Missouri. This camp is a well-respected camp where young Jewish people go to grow up as teenagers. When determining which activity would be best for Zeta Beta Tau (hereafter ZBT) and correlated to UT and ZBT values, the only activity that stuck in my mind was the ropes course. For those unfamiliar with the ropes course, it is “a challenging outdoor personal development and team building activity that typically includes high and/or low elements” (Wikipedia). The ropes course is a proven method that builds trust and respect among members, develops participants into leaders and demonstrates the integrity, responsibility, brotherly love and intellectual awareness of those who participate as well as the development of these attributes. dangers of high ropes, we will stick to the "low" ropes course if implemented. The activities that take place during such an event are cooperative play, group initiative and confidence-building games. Cooperative play is “a fun activity designed to lower inhibitions and break down barriers. These activities are often not based on a defined task but on a sequence of events. Through this, as a group and as individuals, we learn to be responsible and discover things about ourselves and others that were previously unknown...... middle of paper .... .. participates, there would be no mandate for people to attend outside of board members. For financial reasons, we will only implement this initiative if enough people decide to attend. In the dream scenario of 100% participation, the group leaders (we would be divided into smaller groups due to the size of the fraternity but everyone will follow the exact same program) will be the board members of administration. Outside of the executive council, the groups will be diverse in terms of academic levels. It will be mandatory that each group have at least one member from each grade level. To recap, the ropes course is a proven method that builds trust and respect among members, turns participants into leaders, and demonstrates integrity, responsibility. , brotherly love and intellectual awareness of those who participate as well as the development of these attributes.
