Essay / Sexism in Early Civilizations - 748
Even in early civilizations, sexism was widespread, women were not included in democracy, they were not allowed to vote, and in some earlier civilizations , women were not even allowed to have a job or leave the house. Even as a 16-year-old girl in America, the supposed land of dreams, I face sexism every day. I see it when I watch the news, I see it when I walk the halls of my school, I see it even when I read novels and articles or watch a movie online. More than 60% of serious journalistic positions are given to men, while women are found in the less important or less popular sections. At school, I see boys calling girls stupid, or girls getting a pass to their locker because they forgot something, even if a boy was just denied access. I notice sexism the most in literature and films, I see female characters being "stupid" or acting stupid and helpless, their main role in the play is to wait for the male character to save them, or to be a comic relief. Not only are women's employment and dignity at stake, but so are our sexuality, education and rights. Women's rights are an effort to ensure equal rights for women and eliminate gender discrimination from laws, institutions and patterns of behavior. More fundamentally said; Women strive to make men see them as equals rather than inferior human beings. Women's rights began with the women's rights movement that began in the 19th century. Women began to find work and realize that the way they had been treated for thousands of years was unfair and needed to end as soon as possible. In 1848, the first women's rights convention was held in Seneca, New York. More than 300 people were present, including 40 men. This convention launched the women's rights movement. Just over 50...... middle of paper ...... is looking at you, and that alone could change sexism. While researching my project, I learned that everyone contributes to sexism in one way or another, and we all need to come together to stop it. Women discriminate against other women, as well as men. Men are discriminatory against other men, and obviously against women. In the future, I hope to see a world where a woman earns the same as a man, for the same amount of work. I hope to see all girls around the world benefit from an education. I long for the day when a woman comes out to her family and is taken seriously. I look forward to the day when a woman is president. And above all, I hope to see the end of sexism. Works Cited “50 Fascinating Facts for Women's History Month.” 2011. May 1. 2014
