Essay / Logos In I Have A Dream Speech - 1001
Logos appeals to the audience's logic. Dr. King uses a lot of metaphors in his speech, when Dr. King says, "America gave the black people a bad check, a check that came back marked 'insufficient funds.' (King, 1963). He's basically saying that America doesn't follow the Constitution because all men are supposed to be equal. African Americans are not equal and still suffer. They marched to Washington to cash their checks so they could be treated equally. Another metaphor used is when King says, “The time has come to open the doors of opportunity to all of God's children” (King, 1963). It just means it’s time for everyone to have equal opportunities. The last example of logos is where Dr. King uses what is happening in Mississippi. He says, “I dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of justice, suffocating with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.” (King, 1963). King compares oppression and injustice to stifling heat, justice and freedom to an oasis. By using logos, he was able to use metaphors to make the speech easier to understand. Black audiences were able to understand and white audiences were able to better understand what was happening.
