Information was collected on the contribution of fast food restaurants to communities from the perspectives of obesity, wages, waste, benefits and community relations. Although the fast food industry may have negative aspects, fast food restaurants benefit the community in some ways.1. Fast Food and Obesity America is the fattest country in the world and continues to get bigger. Obesity is the second leading cause of death after deaths caused by smoking. In 1991, 1 in 8 adults was obese; in 1999, 1 in 5 adults were obese, showing how America is becoming increasingly obese. In 1991, only four states had obesity prevalence rates of 15 to 19 percent, and no states had rates at or above 20 percent. In contrast, in 2004, 7 states had a prevalence of 15 to 19%; an overwhelming 33 states had a prevalence of 20-24%, and 9 states had prevalence rates above 25%. The U.S. Surgeon General says 61 percent of Americans are significantly overweight, up from 55 percent in the 1990s and 46 percent in the 1970s.
