Essay / Essay on Symbolism in Macbeth - 698
Symbolism in MacbethIn the play Macbeth, there are many literary techniques. The one that struck me the most would be the symbolism. I feel like the play evolved around symbolism, and that really makes a huge difference in the play Macbeth. Somehow in the room it is always dark when something horrible event is going to happen. In Act 1, Scene 5 and Line 3, Lady Macbeth asks "the thick night" to come with the "smoke of hell", practically saying that the dagger that she uses it to hurt the king. The darkness compares to the dark act she performs at that point in the play. Another example in Act 1, Scene 5, and Line 3 of how darkness plays an important role in Macbeth is when Lady Macbeth calls upon the murderous spirits to "keep heaven from looking through the covering of darkness to shout: well, well! She says the light will protect her from anything bad and it's the only thing that could stop her from killing Duncan. Light and life are also great symbols in Macbeth because Lady Macbeth believes that light will protect her from evil but evil always. I found her. When Lady Macbeth begins to go mad, she still wants a candle of life with her in Act 5, scene 1 and line 4. When Macbeth hears of Lady Macbeth's suicide, he responds with "put out, put out a brief candle" in act 5, scene 5., line 3. The candle flame was also an example of a metaphor for Lady Macbeth's very short life which she lived filled with darkness for the last memories of her life. This also applies to Banquo's torch being extinguished the second he is killed by the murderers in Act 3, scene 3 and line 1. Another example is the night King Duncan is killed by Macbeth, Lennox said a fire in his chimney was 'exploded' for no reason in the middle of a paper......it is said that an owl killed a hawk and that doesn't usually happen so it shows just there that the natural order in which things are supposed to happen in the world does not occur during this period due to the actions of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth during the last months of their lives. From blood to daggers to nature, there are many symbols that represent deep things, the dark events that happened in Macbeth. This gives him a very sinful attitude for the duration of the play which makes him feel all the emotions that the characters must have felt. Having such strong symbols made this piece very interesting because the symbols were always connected to each other, so everything related to each other and simply had multiple meanings instead of just one.
