Essay / The Character-Driven Journey of Self-Discovery
AN ALMOST PERFECT PICTURE presents itself as a character-driven journey of self-discovery. It's an original story with a fresh voice. The story centers on a Persian Jewish family and the struggles they engage in. The main protagonist is Sam, who is a drug addict and struggles with inner conflict. The story is driven more by the emotional needs and struggles of the family than by an achievable goal. The tone is dramatic. The storyline features a complex set of characters. There are strong themes about family, second chances, and life choices. Although there are strong elements in this story, the storyline would benefit from further development. Firstly, it is a very difficult script to read due to its structure. The overall story is too long and the structure is not a user-friendly or effective structure. That said, the opening scene with Sam's voiceover "everybody fuck you" is strong and it captures the audience's attention. The idea of life and people not caring about each other is relevant. Unfortunately, after this opening, the story structure does not engage the audience. One reason is that too many characters are introduced, not only in the opening, but throughout the storyline. There are just too many characters to keep track of. This needs to be rationalized. If a character doesn't add significantly to the story, remove them. For example, Nicole and Jasmine or several minor supporting roles like Omid. The other concern with having too many characters is that it dilutes the other characters. No character is focused or fully developed. The other concern with structure is the constant cutting or transitioning from one scene to the next and from one character to another throughout...... middle of paper.... ..and when he realizes his faults. The other supporting characters are believable, but there are just too many of them. The professional presentation must be neat. There are formatting issues on almost every page. There are missing scene titles which makes it harder to read, there are too many cuts from one scene to the next which also makes it hard to follow. There are poorly presented characters (Sean) and poorly formatted dialogue (the voiceovers). Additionally, there should be no notes to the director or reference to shots unless one is directing the film. There are also typos. The script is too long and should be less than 110 pages (approximately). In summary, although the script is presented with an original voice, the stories are not compelling enough and the protagonist is not approachable enough to care about...
