  • Essay / Comparison of “Nothing's Changed” and “Still I Rise”

“Compare and contrast Tatamkhulu Afrika’s “Nothing’s Changed” and Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise.” There are thousands of different poems around the world, from different cultures and traditions. . Each of them is unique in its own way. The poem “Nothing Has Changed” was written by Tatamkhulu Afrika in 1990. Afrika was born in 1920 in Egypt. He had a fairly pale complexion because his father was Arab and his mother Turkish. When Tatamkhulu Afrika was a young child, he and his family moved to an area called "District Six" in South Africa; Cape Town. Afrika's parents died during his childhood, so he was bought by a white family of South African descent. "Cape Town" suffered from a lot of racism in the 1940s and 1990s. The country of South Africa was so heavily segregated along ethnic lines that even new laws were passed to separate people according to their racial groups. This is called the Apartheid Act and was introduced in 1990. Apartheid separated white, black and colored people in all areas of life. This included: jobs, hospitals, transportation, housing, public parks and even water fountains. However, this law was finally dismantled in 1993; three years after its acquisition. During the three years of apartheid law, people of black origin suffered the most. They were treated with unequal rights – all legally classified among the least important people in life. On the other hand, whites were treated with loyalty and value: the complete opposite of what blacks experienced. People of different races but color were not ranked on the same level as black people and therefore did not suffer as much. But the people of these colorful circles were s...... middle of paper...... ll, mean mouth' perhaps from the condensation left on the glass from the poet's shocked expression. Alternatively, it could be the number zero: worthless, worthless, and complete nothingness. At the end of the poem, Afrika becomes frustrated because he feels excluded. He wants to break the restaurant window with “a stone” or “a bomb”. The word “thrill” is associated with broken glass. This language also allows the reader to suggest that Tatamkhulu Afrika is haunted by its past as it is a strange and ghostly word. Some readers may see a hidden meaning in breaking the glass. An alternative interpretation is that the poet might long for the separation of whites and blacks in South Africa to break down and the whole conflict to end. Maya Angelou is a singer, writer, poet and dancer born in the year 1928 in South America.
