Essay / Argumentative Essay on Mindfulness - 1170
Studies have shown that many students are not able to handle stress in school, which hinders the brain's ability to act normally (Shahrokh and Hales , 2003). If a person is unable to manage the stress they face, it will have negative consequences by causing several psychological disorders (Canby et al., 2014). Entering post-secondary education is a completely new environment for students, as it can be difficult for many to adapt to this new environment. Many factors cause stress when students enter college, including coping with lower grades (Struthers et al., 2000) and the need to create a new social life. Once a social life is established, it can cause more stress among students because it can lead to peer pressure that results in risky behaviors. In particular, peer pressure can cause alcoholism or drug addiction (Seiffge-Krenke, 1990) or it can also cause unprotected sex. Not only is stress caused by peer pressure, but it can also be caused by headaches and lack of energy. If a student constantly stays up late to complete homework or study, it can cause headaches due to lack of sleep; thus causing stress. With all the factors discussed, it can be difficult to overcome these external factors which can ultimately lead to stress among individuals.
