Essay / The Struggle for Women's Rights - 1168
In the past, many people believed that women's exclusive responsibilities were to serve their husbands, to be great mothers and perfect wives. These people considered women more suitable for taking care of the household than for getting involved in business or politics. This meant that women were not allowed to have jobs, own property, or enjoy the same basic rights as men. The world is changing and so is the role of women in society. In today's society, women have rights they never had before and a better chance of succeeding. Women have been humiliated in many ways, such as making their own decisions and having the same rights as men. Women had no authority within or outside their family. Their role was simply to maintain the house, look after the children and cook for the family. Some of them were “lucky” to work in semi-adapted jobs, such as teachers, nurses, jewelers or office workers. Even though their salaries were very limited, they wanted to work to show a little of their independence. In the 1800s, women were going through a very difficult time in society. They were not allowed to vote or express their opinion. They were to stand idly by and watch as men decided their own personal rights. Men did not believe that women were capable of making complicated decisions and that it was up to men to decide everything. Men didn't believe women were smart enough to do anything. They believed that women were supposed to be at home to educate their sons to gain more knowledge and their daughters to be housewives. Their life was very hard since they had no rights. It was difficult for women to access any type of education since no schools accepted female students. They were not allowed to become professionals in all professional and personal aspects of life. Today, we see women working in all fields, including lawyers, engineers, doctors, etc. Although they still face some form of discrimination, especially when it comes to salary, they have achieved what they were trying to achieve many years ago. After the women's rights movement, certain privileges such as the right to vote, freedom from discrimination in employment, and equal pay in employment were put on par with those of men in society of today. In fact, we now see men being the “housewives” and caring for the children while their wives are the ones working and bringing in the money for the family. This is how much impact women have on today's society. People didn't realize that what a man could do, a woman could also do. We can now express how free women are and how they were taken for granted in the early years..
