Mental illnesses are increasing at an alarming rate worldwide and are one of the significant health problems in today's world. Depression in older adults differs from depression in young adults which is accompanied by physical symptoms and comorbidities rather than emotional symptoms. The presentation of these somatic conditions makes the diagnosis of depression difficult in older adults and therefore requires identification of differences between symptoms of depression and coexisting somatic conditions. Ms. Lily was cooperative in establishing rapport and constantly sought reassurance. Ms Lily expressed a feeling of hopelessness and said she could not see herself getting better. Additionally, Ms. Lily stated that "nothing seems to work for me." Ms. Lily has expressed fleeting thoughts about ending her life by taking all of her medications, but has no intention of doing so. Ms. Lily has a very supportive husband whom she married since last...... middle of paper...... and therefore, managing the coexisting conditions would reduce the client's burden. Monitoring thyroid function and assessing throat pain are part of nursing care. Medication management and nonpharmacologic interventions were implemented to manage the client's condition. Current medication should be reviewed by the physician because polypharmacy increases the risk of depression and drug interactions and increases the risk of medication noncompliance. The first step in providing nursing care to this client involves risk assessment and monitoring. This will help reduce the chances of success or harm from self-neglect. Providing medications and psychotherapy is another aspect of nursing care of the client. Educating the patient and her husband about depression and its treatment will help alleviate depressive symptoms..
