  • Essay / A Terrible Love of War by James Hillman - 1240

I believe you can be a warrior and not believe in war, and you can believe in war and not be a warrior. Being a soldier does not make you a warrior; you must choose to be a warrior. As a warrior, you follow a moral code protecting those around you, by doing what is moral and correct (action), which does not always correspond to ethical behavior which are standards set by society's expectations. An example would be German society under Hitler's rule. Following the ethical standards of society at the time, the holocaust occurred. However, many Germans followed their moral standards and chose to help their fellow human beings escape persecution. Societal ethics are flexible and fluctuate depending on the “power” of the time. Moral norms go beyond orthopraxy and government and are found in the individual himself as a code of behavior. This does not mean that they do not sometimes overlap with religious or societal ethics, it simply means that the individual has taken this behavior as their own behavior.
