Essay / Progressive education in the 1970s - 1225
Did progressive education permeate an immigrant high school in the 1970s? In the late 19th century, progressive movements emerged that affected many aspects of the United States such as education, culture, and politics. . Since the rapid increase in high school enrollment during this period, educators and reformers desired an appropriate method for teaching these students and debated what should be involved in the curriculum. The ideals of progressive education led by John Dewey, American philosopher and progressive reformer. He insisted that the program should be more flexible and based on students' interest. Dewey encouraged children to get out of the classroom to learn real-life experience (Ravitch, 2000). Additionally, in the 20th century, schools in this country were affected by large numbers of immigrants, especially in large cities. Ravitch (2000) wrote that in urban areas like New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Boston, second generation immigrants made up more than 50 percent of public schools in the 1910s. Were these newcomer students influenced by progressive education? I interviewed my advisor who is a Greek-American who attended high school in Tampa, Florida between 1971 and 1975. During this period, progressive education re-emerged in American high school for social and political reasons . , including ongoing protests against the Vietnam War and national desegregation for African Americans (Ravitch, 2000). I chose him as my interviewee because I wanted to explore the effects of progressive theories on these immigrant students. He attended the single-sex high school, which is more than 50 percent Greek immigrants. He recalled that he took intelligence......middle of paper......did not exist in his school. However, although the emphasis is on traditional education, such as using less flexible curricula, teaching core subjects, varied tastings and narrow choices, we still notice that progressive education ideas are still part of our educational scene, like progressive education. Compared to his experience, I find that education has progressed over the last forty years. Today, high school students enjoy a more flexible curriculum, many social activities, and more choices based on their interests. The ideas of progressive education are perfect in theory, but we cannot abandon traditional education. Without scientists like Einstein and Tesla in the 20th century, we would not have a good life today. We must not only educate students based on traditional methods, but also use some progressive ideals to cultivate more creative students..
