Essay / Epic of Beowulf - 795
Beowulf"In a world without hope, a brave soul has nothing to lose." In the epic Beowulf, some might perceive Beowulf as having traits such as arrogance. Despite being raised in a pagan society, Beowulf performs many tasks that an ordinary man could never accomplish. It depicts man in general struggling against his external enemies and his internal doubts. Beowulf displays his characteristics; courage and strength, fame, perseverance and compassion; which gives him the opportunity to be considered an epic hero. Without courage, few people can accomplish much. As Beowulf travels, his courage not only grows, but remains strong. During his journey to Hrothgar's kingdom, Beowulf is faced with many unbearable tasks that many men would not dare face, but with Beowulf, he takes on these tasks and runs away with them. His fight with Grendal proves not only his courage but also his strength. Beowulf, being a mortal man, takes Grendal by the hands and tears his hand off, leaving Grendal mortally wounded. When Grendal's mother tries to avenge her son's death, she is rudely awakened. After killing Ashchere, she returns to her lair in Hell, but not for long. Beowulf goes to take care of her and swims through the deep, dark, miserable waters to Hell. He finds Grendal's mother there and kills her without any warning. His bravery also saves his people in his homeland. After ascending the throne, a terrible dragon begins to terrorize his home. Here he proves to his people that he is in fact a true hero. He, with the help of his dear relative, kills the dragon even after being injured. His courage and strength make him a true epic hero. With an epic hero, you have to know his journeys and his battles. Like Beowulf, he is known throughout the land. His fame helped him immensely in becoming this hero. His courageous fights and achievements led to his known defeats in battle against huge and ferocious monsters. After his death, his people promised him that a burial mound would be built in his memory so that he could be remembered. Not only did his people hear his request, but they also honored it. They built a huge mound on top of a high cliff above the waters where boats could see and remember him..
