Symbolism is an important literary technique that "signifies ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings different from their literal meaning." The symbolism provides a deeper and more meaningful understanding throughout the novel. In The Awakening, many symbols are used to describe Edna. The use of birds is an important element. The beginning of the novel opens with the bird shouting and insulting Mr. Pontellier. This bird expresses Edna's feelings and symbolizes her entrapment as a mother and wife. On the other hand, the mockingbird, capable of understanding parrot Spanish, represents Miss Reisz, because she is the only one who understands Edna and with whom Edna feels comfortable sharing her feelings.
