Imagination is a concept used in almost all forms of literature. It is particularly appreciated by writers of the Romantic era. Writers of this era, such as Worth, Coleridge and Keats, greatly influenced those of successive periods, such as the Victorian period. This can be seen, for example, in the novel Jane Eyre; Even though it was written and based heavily on the ideals of Victorian writers, it still contains influences from the Romantics, particularly the power of the imagination. Williamworth's view on imagination can easily be seen in the two poems Expostulation & Reply and The Tables Turned. In these two short poems, Worth pays homage to the sciences; he does not despise them. However, he argues that to ignore nature, and by extension, imagination, would be to ignore part of what it means to be human.
