  • Essay / They can take my brush, but never my freedom!

Censorship is the process of preventing something too offensive, obscene or perverse from being seen, heard or read by the general public. This usually happens when a book, painting, song, or even a name becomes very offensive or morally corrupt. Artistic censorship has existed since the beginnings of the arts, from the statues of the ancient Roman Empire to Michelangelo's masterpiece The Last Judgment. Censorship can be good or bad. As an artist, my opinion is that censorship is fundamentally either a way to improve something for a wider audience, or to limit it to the point of extinction. Censorship of art dates back to ancient Athens, the Roman Empire, and the medieval Catholic Church. Together they funded many artists, but also cut many. The United States government did not endorse national art until the 1960s. The National Foundation for the Arts and Humanities was established in 1965. The purpose of this organization was to encourage excellence in art. There are two divisions of this organization. One is the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the other is the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The main reasons for censorship of the arts were the obscenity they promoted and the religious beliefs of certain groups. The view of some religious groups was that through certain forms of art Satan could move freely. Works of art considered obscene or indecent were considered to promote immorality. Some of the world's greatest works of art have been censored over the years. During the early Roman Empire, male nudity was common until the Roman Empire converted to Christianity. Works such as Michelangelo's Statue of David were censored with sheets covering the genital areas. However, this w...... middle of paper ......always in a very tasteful way. I would also never have the heart to censor someone's film. If someone works so hard to finish something, why waste it? They should be able to use their version and only their version. My art is another story. I've never really painted anything that would cause a conflict of interest. I mainly paint flowers, beaches and I draw people. Someone once wanted me to take something out of a sketch just because it was bigger than the rest, I said no, but they bought it anyway because I stood up for myself. I try not to do anything that someone else has already done, and if someone asks me to copy, I usually say no. I will never become someone I am not. As I always say: “You are born original, don’t die a copy”. No one will ever censor me, and if they try, they should know that they can take my brush, but never my freedom.!
