  • Essay / An Analysis by Sargent Clint Van Winkle - 1252

Winkle had to gather his thoughts and correct them for himself. Despite the fact that he had the blood of others on his hands and once took advantage of it. Winkle realized that “if anything, the war made him appreciate life more, it helped him see what was important” (Wrinkle111). According to USA News, the war in Iraq was definitely worth it. Despite the loss of nearly 4,488 Americans and more than 32,000 wounded, America must remember that Iraq stood with the United States and that if we had not liberated Iraq from Saddam's dictatorship , we would still be fighting today. The facts and the truth may never truly come to light, but the fact is that this war had to happen and Iraq needed America to help it regain its freedom and democracy (USA News) . In short, Winkle favored the war because he was a Marine. It was all he had known since he was 18. He loved the camaraderie of being a soldier. He liked to carry a gun and use it. He loved blowing things up. Winkle was good at what he did. It made him feel alive. He probably wouldn't have cared what war it was or what cause he was fighting for, he would only have cared that he was doing his job and doing what he loved with those who shared the same feelings. He felt that he was not fighting for himself, but for the soldiers next to him and those who had gone before him. He thought the war was justified or not, it was not for him to decide, it was for history to decide.
