Essay / Teacher Salary - 1850
Teacher SalaryWhen was the last time you saw a teacher sporting a brand new Lexus? Or when did you hear about a teacher who owned a ranch? The answer to this question is probably never. Although material goods, like owning a luxurious home or driving an extravagant car, may be currency for people like the rich and famous, for teachers, this type of spending is literally an arm and a leg . Even the simplest necessities are out of reach on a teacher's salary. The reason for this problem is due to the budget of our country. Teachers and other members of the school system are underpaid and not adequately compensated for their services. Instead of rewarding teachers with higher salaries, the government is undermining their work. As a result, teachers are unable to buy that expensive car or even afford the Honda they bought when they were studying at college to get their teaching degree. School budgets must be significantly increased to ensure the educational growth of students and the professional development of teachers. Four main reasons are discussed in this paper why more money should be spent on education. There are a number of key reasons why we need to ensure adequate funding for our schools. To begin, we need to increase Internet accessibility in our schools. With our society growing by the minute, the need for technology is increasing rapidly. Today, we rely heavily on the Internet to provide us with timely information. It is used in high-tech companies, at home and in schools. Through the Internet, we enable students to explore new and interesting questions. In addition to the books found in our local library, the Internet provides a fundamental tool for education. With all the advantages that the Internet offers, not all schools have it. “According to a 1999 survey by Education Week, only 87 percent of people living in states like Pennsylvania had access to the Internet” (Gazette 99). “However, this figure rose to 90% in 1999.” Although the numbers have increased, other states are not even close to this number of accesses. This poses a major problem because while other students develop their skills and learn more, others continue to rely on books and articles. Through the use of the Internet, students will not only be introduced to a wide range of topics and search engines, but will also be able to become familiar with technology..
