  • Essay / Zombie - 683

Zombie Apocalypse 1014What evidence would we look for if there was a zombie apocalypse a thousand years ago? The archaeological record would be full of the evidence needed to prove that this event occurred. Four important questions must be asked to determine whether there has indeed been a zombie apocalypse. What evidence would humans leave behind? What would be the settlement patterns among humans? What evidence would you find on a bone? Finally, what evidence would be missing? To answer these questions, it is first necessary to determine a definition of a zombie. Zombies are reanimated corpses wandering aimlessly in search of a food source. Although a single zombie can be deadly, its slow and clumsy movements make it easy to escape. That being said, zombies are most deadly when grouped together. From a distance we hear a horde of zombies escaping. When it comes to food sources, zombies enjoy the flesh of living humans, but they will devour living mammals. Zombies are able to hear and see, so they are attracted to sounds and movements. Now that zombie behavior has been studied, it will help determine what humans should have done to survive. The first question to ask is: what evidence would humans leave behind? There would be weapons, colonies, mass graves; among other elements. Humans should begin to adapt to their new existence. There would probably be some luxury items that were just throwaways. Survivors would leave very few shelters; due to lack of resources, towns are further away from established towns. They are likely to use whatever they have. (May 2010, p231) Regarding the burial of any of the remains, the process will continue for the duration of the event. At first, the remains would likely have been left wherever they fell, especially in larger settlements. Over time, it is likely that there will be burials for humans lost to illness or injury. The remains of the zombies would most likely be burned, thrown into mass graves, or left where they lay. Eventually, towards the end of the event, burials of remains would begin to resume, as before the apocalypse. Physical evidence is a good indicator of the event, but sometimes it is not what is present but what is missing that provides additional evidence. There would be a lack of population growth due to births. It would also be a lack of technical advances.
