  • Essay / African American Culture Essay - 1336

The Gullah language has found its way into all aspects of African culture, including things such as religion and the naming process. The Gullah language has given African proverbs and parables a very connotative nature, which usually makes them relevant. Language also worked its way into the naming process, where Gullah root names were called basket names. Joyner states, “Since a person's name is their most fundamental identity label, [basket names were] not a trivial achievement” (222). While many slave masters believed they had the right to name their newborn slave children, African slaves used these basket names among themselves to establish their own sense of identity. Gullah gave African slaves an exclusive connection within slave communities and is therefore an important aspect of African American culture.
