Essay / Rhinoceros Essay - 634
The black rhinoceros or rhinoceros is a very unique animal in Africa. They are important for the balance of nature. It is a large, stocky animal. Their size is 5 to 6 feet high at the shoulder and 10 to 12 feet long. Their weight can vary from 1,000 to 3,000 pounds. Rhinos are naturally gray in color but often take on the color of the local soil. A rhino's horn is not a real horn. It is not attached to the skull. It grows from the skin and is made of keratin fibers, the same materials found in hair and nails. Black rhinos have a lip that is used much like a finger to select and pluck leaves and twigs that they prefer to eat. Their habitat is the bushy plains, steep hills and scrublands of isolated areas of Central and South Africa. Rhinos are strong browsers that prevent woody plants from dominating their habitat. This is important because it allows the growth of grasses, which provide food for many other animals on the grassy plains. Black rhinos travel alone except when breeding or raising offspring. Juveniles stay with the mother until they are completely weaned, just before a new baby is born. These rhinos are now in danger, they are among the animals on the verge of extinction. The black rhino is critically endangered. South Africa is home to white and black rhinos. This year so far, 341 rhinos have been poached in South Africa and every year 330 rhinos are killed. This year, more rhinos were killed than in previous years. According to the conservation group Save the Rhino, there are 25,000 African rhinos remaining in the world, the majority of them in the country. In Africa, most black and white rhinos are injured. Some people wonder how the animals actually live... middle of paper ...... the solution to helping rhinos is to ban the sale of horns. The use of rhino horns in Asian countries like Taiwan, Korea and Japan certainly contributes to this, as the demand for horns is not as high as before. But the most important thing is to get donations and funding from people, as this can help the rhinos when they are suffering harm. This money also helps rhinos by providing them with medicine that can help them when they fall victim to a poacher. In conclusion, poachers are killing more and more rhinos every year. Rhinos are therefore endangered. 330 rhinos are killed each year in South Africa. Some organizations are trying to stop the killing of rhinos because they only kill them for their horns. So we can donate money to organizations to save rhinos and help them get everything they need to stop the rhino massacre..
