    On Saturday, April 15, protesters gathered in Washington DC to oppose the IMF and the World Bank. The two institutions were scheduled to hold their spring meeting this weekend and the approximately ten thousand demonstrators, whose main goal is the elimination of poverty, marched through the streets of DC. Protesters say what the IMF and World Bank are failing to see is the short-term effects of their economic growth proposals, which include unemployment and increased poverty. Protesters believe the only people profiting from these ideas are big businesses. Fortunately, although many people were arrested, none were seriously injured, as was the case with protesters in Seattle in November. This was because the Washington police had prepared well in advance, securing appropriate buildings and purchasing new riot equipment. This event is an example of a social movement. It was simply an organized group of people brought together with the aim of resisting change (in this case, the strategies discussed by the aforementioned institutions) through their collective action. More specifically, this type of social movement is called a resistance movement, because this group was opposed to changing a certain aspect of our society.
