He was imprisoned after the unique Bear Hall Putsch in 1923. The Bear Hall Putsch resulted in the deaths of four officers. He was sentenced to five years in prison, during which time he wrote Mein Kampf. He was appointed chancellor on January 30, 1933 by President Paul Van Hidenburg. His accession to power could have ended if the Enabling Act of 1933 had not been passed. The Enabling Act of 1933 meant that Hitler could enact laws and establish democracy in Germany. The Nazi Party used force to scare the German government into voting in favor of the law.
