Essay / Alzheimer's Disease and Illness - 1870
“Alzheimer's disease is a brain disease in which damaged and dying brain cells cause mental deterioration over a period of time” (“Alzheimer's Disease », 2015). This disease has affected millions of families around the world and its condition worsens over time. The cause of Alzheimer's disease appears to be the accumulation of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, while some cases are also linked to genetics ("Alzheimer's Disease", 2015). These changes in the brain alter the personality and behavior of the individual. These changes make it difficult to care for a patient with Alzheimer's disease, but you need to have certain qualities to work with someone with this disease. There is still much unknown about this disease, but scientists have found treatments that are believed to help (“Alzheimer’s Disease,” 2010). Since there is no cure, researchers are constantly trying to learn more about the disease. Alzheimer's disease is a very difficult disease to deal with for anyone affected, but researchers are doing their best to find a cure for this terrible disease. Alzheimer's disease is a progressive disease that causes accompanying behaviors. In this disease, the ordered system of the brain is damaged and no longer functions properly. “The brains of Alzheimer's disease victims appear shrunken, particularly in large parts of the neocortex, the outer layer of gray matter responsible for higher brain functions such as thinking and memory” (“Alzheimer's Disease,” 2015). It usually begins with a minor loss of memory of recent events. This loss of memory is gradually accompanied by forgetfulness, lack of hygiene, impaired judgment and loss of concentration. Later symptoms... middle of article...... new treatments and earlier diagnoses. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, but there is no cure. As the disease progresses, patients' condition worsens until death. This disease is caused by a buildup of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain, which do not allow the brain to function properly. Genetics are also thought to play a role (Whitehouse, 2016). All of these changes in the brain are linked to the personality and behavioral changes that occur in a patient. Since there is no true cure, proper care for a patient with Alzheimer's disease is crucial in order to keep them in the best possible condition. There are known treatments, but scientists are constantly trying to learn more about this mysterious disease. Because of all the changes a person must go through, Alzheimer's disease is very traumatic for both the patient and their family..
