Many original residents of the neighborhood have felt invaded since white newcomers moved into their communities, erasing and changing them to suit their tastes middle class. For example, in the article “Racial Tension: The Other Side of Gentrification” by Zaira Cortes, Cristian Chávez, an Ecuadorian artist who grew up in El Barrio, states: “I don't blame white people but the city, because it prioritized gentrification. their needs rather than ours. Bike paths are one example of how authorities provide resources to newcomers. Throughout my childhood, I had to avoid cars. Nobody cared about colored children. This clearly demonstrates that before the gentrification of East Harlem began, the needs of people of color were still neglected. However, as white newcomers began to settle in the neighborhood, the city began to offer them more services and amenities. Gentrification then becomes a problem because it creates this tension between longtime residents and newcomers, who see the priorities of white residents being favored over them.
