(1) Define Sir Walter Raleigh and the Lost Colony of Roanoke and the purpose of English colonization. During the age of exploration, the countries of Spain and England were rivalries. Spain, after the discoveries of Columbus, explored and colonized the lands of Mexico and Peru. With the riches it obtained, Spain overwhelmed England with its powerful navy, but failed to do so because of the strong will and nationalism of the English explorers. Sir Walter Raleigh was one of these brave men and soon became a distinguished member of English society. He was favored by Queen Elizabeth but was still unhappy with his glamorous life. Raleigh had wanted to ensure the glory of England so that its superiority would surpass that of Spain. Raleigh inherited from his half-brother the right to establish an English colony. Before returning to England for supplies, he told the colonist to carve a cross on a tree if there was danger. When he returned, he saw a neighbor's name is...... middle of paper ......h government. This method of indirect rule did not require much direct involvement from the king. A main difference between the two colonies is that later, as overseas colonies became more permanent and many difficulties eased, the royal colony method of governing became more popular. . A royal colony consisted of two sections of government including a representative of the king as well as local elected officials. However, a proprietary colony usually consisted of one or two individual rulers responsible for the chartered lands..
