Why I Live in PO was written by Eudora Welty in 1941. Sister, the first person narrator, who is a flat character in the story, causes external conflicts in the within his family as a result of his inner conflicts. Like lack of self-confidence and the demanding need to be the center of attention. Due to the conflicts she faces within herself, she is pushed to leave the family home and settle in at the post office. At the beginning of the story, the reader feels sympathy for Sister due to the ongoing conflicts, but later in the story we begin to see that these conflicts have been perpetuated by Sister herself. As this happens, the story takes on a comical aspect from the reader's point of view, and we lose our sympathy for Sister. Sister lives in China Grove, Mississippi, probably a very small town with only a few occupants. She lives with her mother, grandfather and uncle in their house, being the center of attention until her younger sister, Stella-Rondo, returns. The return of Stella-Rondo immediately triggers a conflict with Sister because Sister is visibly jealous of her and has been so even before her return to China Grove. The reader gets clear evidence of Sister's jealousy of Stella-Rondo when Sister says, "She always had everything she wanted and then she would throw it away." » (594). It's clear that Sister has a predisposition to Stella-Rondo's return for many reasons, and this is the beginning of the conflict she begins to have with herself. Stella-Rondo comes home with a child in the middle of dinner and Sister feels greatly offended by this and shows us her arrogance and dismay at losing the center of attention when she says “There, I was o. ..... middle of paper ... marking time, hoping that a family member will come to the post office and beg for her return as she states: "What if Stella-Rondo came to me this minute, on his knees, and tried to explain to me the incidents of his life…I would just put my fingers in both my ears and refuse to listen” (602). that Sister hopes that Stella-Rondo will come for her in hopes of giving her the attention she desires. Throughout the story, it is Sister who has tried to persuade the reader to take her side in the matter. conflict with her family The truth is that it was Sister who caused the whole argument which continues with her obsession with competing with her sister and which goes back to her childhood where she feels that Stella-Rondo is spoiled and continues to do so.
