    Although Mrs. Spring Fragrance has only lived in America a short time, her husband states, "There are no more American words for her learning" (865) . It is evident from this statement that Mrs. Spring Fragrance quickly became familiar not only with the English language, but also with American customs and traditions. However, all of the characters in Mrs. Spring Fragrance does not adapt as easily to American culture as Mrs. Spring Fragrance; some characters struggle to abandon their Chinese wedding traditions and accept that in America, love comes before marriage. Throughout Mrs. Spring Fragrance, Sui Sin Far depicts the process that the Chinese characters go through as they slowly begin to alienate traditional Chinese culture and become Americanized by accepting American culture as their own. In the first paragraphs of Mrs. Spring Fragrance, Sui Sin Far introduces readers to the Chin Yeuns and their beautiful 18-year-old daughter, Mai Fwi Fan, who goes by her American name, Laura. Sui Sin Far describes the Chin Yeun as living "in a house furnished in an American style and wearing American clothes, but they religiously observed many Chinese customs and their ideals of life were the ideals of their Chinese ancestors" (865). In accordance with Chinese tradition, Laura's parents "betrothed their daughter" (865) to the son of the Chinese government schoolteacher. Laura confesses to Mrs. Spring Fragrance that she is really in love with Kai Tzu. Mrs. Spring Fragrance is the only person who knows about Laura and Kai Tzu's relationship. Unfortunately, for Laura, her engagement is fast approaching. Mrs. Spring Fragrance, trying to cheer up her young friend, cites the famous l...... middle of paper ...... Americanized in a different way. For example, Mrs. Spring Fragrance becomes Americanized by helping Laura and Kai Tzu form a relationship despite Laura's engagement to the schoolmaster's son. The Chin Yuens become Americanized by finally allowing their daughter to marry her true love Kai Tzu. The Chin Yuens are no longer just American in appearance, but they are also American in their traditions. Mr. Spring Fragrance, however, had a much harder time Americanizing himself throughout the story. He had difficulty accepting that the people around him, including his wife, were changing and becoming Americanized. Mr. Spring Fragrance has finally accepted the fact that although Laura and Kai Tzu have achieved a happy marriage through American wedding traditions, he and Mrs. Spring Fragrance are just as happy in their marriage through Chinese traditions...
