Essay / My Experience Volunteering in a Nursing Home - 460
Until a few years ago, I never thought one of my grandparents would be in a nursing home. I have always been lucky to have them in good health. However, that changed about a year ago when my grandfather had a mini-stroke, causing him to require additional care that my grandmother could not provide. Seeing my family care for my grandfather made me aware of the care and services seniors need and made me realize how important it is to volunteer at a local nursing home . My grandfather's stroke affected his legs and memory, making my grandfather's life difficult. him to walk. My grandfather first used a cane, but his legs became too weak, so he tried a walker, but that only lasted a month. Not only could he no longer walk or take care of himself, but he began staying up at night and falling out of bed. My family started looking for nursing homes. It took us weeks before we finally decided. Unfortunately, he will have to stay there until he improves, both mentally and physically. Since the summer, I have been volunteering at her retirement home because I saw how lonely some of the residents were. I volunteered two days a week during the summer, and continued. I learned a lot about nursing homes and the factors to consider when choosing a nursing home, including the quality of life of the residents, the care received, the environment around them, and the payment policy of the retirement home. I worked with the recreation director, who plans activities for residents. I painted women's nails and read them letters from their children. Additionally, I contributed to special days like Ice Cream Day, Summer Picnic Day, and Clown Day. For each one we create special word blends. I have also taken patients for walks. We also organize birthday parties and exercise days. Through my volunteering, I made a new friend - Irene. She has family, but they live far away and can't come visit often. Our friendship grew throughout the summer. She grew up in Shelton and lived in Milford before coming home. She has two sons who rarely visit her. Her grandchildren, however, visit her every weekend.
