Essay / Management Functions - 855
Management FunctionsThere are four main functions performed by management. These four functions are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling (Batemen & Snell, 2009, p. 19). Planning is where all the concepts of an organization are designed. Organization is how the organization is set up. Leading is how the management of an organization motivates its employees. Finally, control is how management determines business performance and then decides what changes to make (Batemen & Snell, 2009). Planning is the primary function of management. This is where it all begins. This is where management looks at the company's current situation, as well as the goals it has set for the future, and plans how it will move forward and achieve those goals. Management will decide what actions are necessary to move the company forward and in which direction they want to move it (Batemen & Snell, 2009, p. 19). At Premiere Real Estate, where I currently work, the planning function is primarily carried out. by the business owner. I have some input as office manager, but ultimately the decision is his. I have the most influence when it comes to planning how the office itself operates versus how the business operates. Organization is the next management function. This is where management decides how the business itself should be established. This is where management decides what types of resources the company needs to implement the plans it developed during the planning phase. Examples of these resources are human, financial, and physical (Batemen & Snell, 2009, p. 20). In the company I work for, it is above all my responsibility. Once the owner has told me of his plans for the direction he wants to take the company, he leaves it to me to organize the way in which the company will carry out his plans. I am given a budget and from there I make the necessary decisions about how to spend that budget. It is my responsibility to determine whether or not I need to hire more employees to help implement the plans. I also have to decide if we are technologically where we need to be and make sure we have the appropriate physical space to implement the owner's plans. The next function is that of leading. This function is how management motivates and communicates with its employees.
