Essay / Who is the target audience of People magazine?
Have you ever looked through a magazine and found it really interesting? This is because you are part of their target audience. You are part of a group of people that the magazine is trying to attract. There's a reason Sports Illustrated is more of a men's magazine and Family Circle is more of a women's magazine. The people who run this magazine put certain things in these magazines to attract their audience. Most often, men are interested in sports and everything related to sports. In Sports Illustrated, the reader would find sports, and that's it. The reader would not find an article titled “How Working Women Balance Their Careers and Family Life.” An article like this would be in a magazine like Family Circle, because it is aimed more at women who have families. For the purposes of this visual audience analysis, I will discuss the October 8, 2012 issue of People magazine. Looking at this issue and looking through the magazine, it's obvious that the editors have a target audience in mind. This visual analysis will discuss who its target audience is and how the reader can tell. Additionally, the essay will explain how the magazine makes the advertisements relevant to its audience. To begin with, People magazine's target audience is women between the ages of eighteen and thirty-two due to the topics of the articles and advertisements. The women would have at most had a secondary education, because most of the advertisements are for items that are not really expensive. These women are believed to be Caucasian and are located in the states of California or New York, as most of the women photographed are Caucasian. The reason for California or New York is that women in those areas have...... middle of paper...... This is inferred because the articles are about current celebrities and their lives. These women would be more interesting to these women than a fifty year old man. It can also be said that the reader will not see an article about fishing in People magazine because it is not relevant to the target audience. Magazines also offer advertisements that may appeal to this target audience. People has advertisements for items such as makeup and facial cleansers that would appeal to young adult women, not older women in their 60s and 70s. As with the articles, we can say that the reader will not find advertising for Viagra or Copenhagen chewing tobacco. This is not relevant to the target audience. This is how a magazine becomes successful and sells a lot of issues. It wouldn't sell as much if it didn't stay focused on a particular target audience..
