The neighborhood of Philadelphia in which the 6th Street Boys reside is not the poorest neighborhood in the city, however, it can still be classified as a poor neighborhood. The young men examined never really had a positive male role model in their lives and were exposed to crime from an early age. Institutional bodies also play a role here. The gang committed crimes, however, the police officers who patrolled the neighborhood were portrayed as bad guys, who just wanted to make these young men's lives hell, by harassing them, their loved ones and their neighbors. The other institutional body at stake was the high school attended by the gang members. A simple schoolyard fight escalated out of proportion, leading men to distrust authority figures. Drug use also appeared to be widespread throughout the neighborhood. This led me to one of two things: either become a junkie or become a drug dealer. While some people emerge from these environments as successful adults, many do not, and Goffman made sure to emphasize this point. The detailed description of Miss Linda's (a drug user and addict) home almost made me sick.
