Essay / Tuition Increase - 736
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, tuition and related fees have increased by 893 percent (“College Costs and CPI”). 893 percent is a very intimidating percentage when you consider that it has outpaced increases in Medicare, food and housing costs. As America attempts to emerge from recession, many students are seeking higher education so they can obtain satisfying employment. However, their vision is tainted by the terrible rise in college costs. Tuition fees are increasing beyond inflation. Such an increase in tuition fees has many serious implications for students; for example, fewer students attend private colleges, fewer students remain enrolled in college, and fewer students work in the fields in which they majored. As the high school chapter comes to a close, many students must make a decision. it will affect the rest of their lives. Hopefully, for many, that decision is to enroll in a university and pursue higher education. However, as tuition costs rise, students must re-examine their options for a better future. For many, community college is a second choice because it is the least expensive option. From 2007 to 2009, community college enrollment increased 24 percent (“College Costs and CPI”). Students do not choose a university for educational purposes because they are overwhelmed by financial problems. They attend community colleges so they can graduate with less debt. Some seniors have wanted to attend a certain college their whole lives and work to achieve that goal starting in elementary school; However, they are bothered by the soaring tuition fees at this college. Students should be able to attend a private university if they meet... middle of paper ...... the mindset of students who aspire to jobs that will allow them to repay their hefty loans. Students are not looking for their passion but rather apathetic work that society imposes on them. America's future lies in its youth, and building an educated, career-interested youth would benefit society. Rising tuition costs are hurting American higher education. The greater the financial pressure on these children, the more they are unable to focus on their goals and dreams. Even if inflation is a problem, students who successfully complete their degrees will benefit society if they care more about their work. They should be able to fulfill their duty in society and an increase in tuition fees will significantly hamper this vision.
