Essay / The importance of sovereignty today - 1985
Is the concept of sovereignty beneficial in our lives today despite the start of globalization? Although many may argue that the benefits of globalization outweigh those of sovereignty, few would acknowledge the fact that our societies still need sovereign states to eliminate, for example, the disappearance of the middle class and the disintegration social gap between low wages and high wages which results from globalization. In this essay I argue that although the idea of sovereignty within individual states is currently in decline due to globalization, sovereignty should have a role to play in our daily lives because it provides countries with the opportunity to create their own laws that best suit their own goals. I recognize that globalization and the elimination of sovereignty that it entails offer many benefits to the countries involved, but I show that the consequences of the onset of globalization and the elimination of sovereignty within individual states go beyond the benefits brought by globalization. It is first important to define exactly what the key terms of this debate are, namely “globalization” and “sovereignty”. Globalization can be defined as "the continuing movement toward economic, political, social and cultural interdependence that has, for better or worse, reduced the autonomy of sovereign states", while sovereignty can be defined as the " principle of self-government; a state is sovereign is to claim that it has a monopoly of force over people and institutions in a given territorial area” (Garner et al. 455, 459).
