    Zakat is the third pillar of Islam. It is an Arabic word that translates to purification or growth. It is generally considered a tax, since the contributor must contribute 2.5% of their wealth to charity. However, Zakat is not appreciated because of the money given, but the motive behind it. The intentions of giving Zakat should be pure and simply aimed at pleasing Allah and earning good deeds. The reasons why we are obliged to pay it are that everything belongs to God and the wealth is simply lent to us by Allah and we must take care of it and use it well. Our possessions are purified by reserving a portion for those who need it. Additionally, paying Zakat increases our self-esteem because we know that we have performed an act of humility. A reference from the Quran states: “You will achieve piety only if you give what is dear to you. » This means that you are only a humble servant of Allah if you share your wealth with others.
