Joseph Raymond McCarthy, formerly a senator, is best known for his accusatory comments on communism. During the Cold War, opposition to McCarthy was the last thing the public wanted for fear of being accused themselves. McCarthy led a life of almost fifty years, beginning on November 14, 1908 and ending on May 2, 1957 due to acute hepatitis and numerous other liver ailments and problems (Reference Staff). Joseph McCarthy was born in Grand Chute, Wisconsin on November 14. , 1908 to Timothy and Bridget McCarthy. As a teenager and early adult, McCarthy completed eight years of schooling and began working on a farm, returning to high school in Manawa in 1929. McCarthy completed high school in one year ( "Historical Images of Wisconsin"). Once McCarthy completed high school, he entered Marquette University to study law and continued to study law in Wisconsin until 1939 ("McCarthy, Joseph Raymond"). During his college life, McCarthy served as a boxing coach, president of his law school class, and held various part-time jobs. His law practices in Wisconsin included opening a practice in Waupaca in 1935, then joining a firm in Shawano, becoming a partner in 1937. During this time, McCarthy ran for public office for the first time, unsuccessfully, in 1936, while trying to win office. for Shawano County District Attorney as a Democrat. A few years after losing his first bid for public office, McCarthy ran for a nonpartisan position as a judge in Wisconsin's Tenth Judicial Circuit. At just 30 years old, McCarthy became the youngest circuit judge ever elected in Wisconsin.
